“Simulation tools, such as augmented reality and virtual reality platforms, are already used by some surgeons to train and rehearse surgical procedures. The use of these technologies can improve surgical training and outcomes, while standardising procedures and democratising access to training.” The Commission on the Future of Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons December 2018

“Advances in imaging and simulation, including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), are already being used to complement surgical training and planning… AR and VR technology platforms will enable multidisciplinary teams to connect and specialist surgeons to support complex procedures remotely” The Commission on the Future of Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons December 2018

Transforming Outpatient Services

“The traditional model of outpatient care is no longer fit for purpose, ie specialty opinion, diagnosis and disease monitoring. It places unnecessary financial and time costs on patients, clinicians, the NHS and the public purse. Growing demand and expectations cannot be, and are not being, met by the status quo. It is no longer acceptable to solely consider the cost of clinical interventions in relation to individual health outcomes.” The Royal College of Physicians 9th November 2018

The outpatient system is older than the NHS and the time has come to grasp the nettle and use tech and other innovations to improve patients’ experience and care. As part of the long term plan for the NHS, it’s right we look at ways to cut unnecessary appointments, save thousands of journeys, reduce traffic and pollution and make the NHS more efficient.” The Royal College of Physicians 9th November 2018
